The cold weather is beginning to set in, which doesn’t leave you too much time to get prepared. However it is important to make sure that your house is ready as the winter weather can play havoc with buildings. Perhaps you should consider doing those last minute jobs over the next couple of weekends before the snow and ice make an appearance. If you are trying to figure out what you need to do, here are a few suggestions to get your brain into gear.
Fix leaky windows

Are your windows behaving as they should? It is important to make sure that they are not leaking cold air into the house, as well as letting your warm air out. Not only will this give your house a distinctive chill, but it will also lead you to paying more on your energy bills as you struggle to maintain an even temperature within the home. There are a few fixes you could choose depending on your windows; they include sealant, draught excluders, or even new windows being fitter.

Protect exterior walls

Once you have sorted your windows, turn your attention to the exterior walls. Are they going to protect your home through the winter? You might want to look at a product such asDulux Weathershield to make sure your walls look great as well as being resistant from mould and algae growth. A little paint could also go a long way in being more welcoming to your seasonal guests within the home.
Pack away garden furniture

If you have a shed or garage at your disposal, it is a great idea to store away your garden furniture during the winter season. This is because storms can be fairly frequent at this time of year, meaning the things can be knocked over or be picked up by the wind. This can cause damage as well as accidents, something which you would want to avoid especially with young children. When spring arrives, make sure to clean everything thoroughly before using.

Check your roof and guttering

Another task to tick off your list is to do with the roof and guttering. You should ensure that the gutters are not blocked and that all roof tiles are in place and fastened securely. Winter storms can lead to roof tiles being waylaid, even resulting in leaks which can become much more serious to deal with. Blocked gutters can cause damp, leaving you with a hefty bill when it affects interior walls.
Decorate for Christmas

Not all of the jobs have ‘chore’ status attached to them! There are more enjoyable tasks such as decorating the home for the Christmas period. There are many things you can do on the exterior of your home depending on your budget and tastes. Something relatively neutral is hanging lights on a tree, or having these adorn the roofline. Of course you can always choose to be a bit more elaborate than this and invest in moving features such as Santa with his sleigh, or a festive snowman.
