Did you know that many Christmas greens spend a lot of time being shipped to your location? This means that by the time you get them, they are ready to start looking limp. If there is a source of trees that are local, buy from there because they are more likely to be fresh. If you must buy shipped ones, make sure to choose very carefully for fresh ones.
2. Keep them in a cool place
Even if you buy fresh and you don’t keep them fresh, your Christmas greens will wither. The best thing to do is to keep them in a chilled place, like the garage until 1 or 2 days before Christmas and then bring them out and decorate.
3. Soak them in water
If the greens you buy don’t come decorated, you can soak them in water overnight and they will keep fresh for longer. For your tree, hose it down every night. If your greens come decorated, check whether the decorations can be removed so that you can soak the greens. It is always better for your interior decoration if you buy greens that don’t have decorations; you can choose items that match your décor.
4. Use products that prolong greenness
There are commercial products that can be used to keep greens fresh. If you cannot get one of these, you can make a simple mixture that is just as effective. Boil a gallon of water and stir in 1 cup of sugar and place in the container that holds the tree. Alternatively, you can 1-gallon hot water, 4 teaspoons of sugar, and 4 teaspoons of vinegar and 4 teaspoons of bleach. Mix them all and place in the reservoir.
5. Mist your greens
All you need is a spray pump and some water. Without damaging your decorations, carefully mist your greens every morning. If you notice some wilt during the day you can also mist them and bring them back to life.
There! Now you know how to keep your greens as long as possible. Merry Christmas!
